Pharmaceuticals

Picture
There is a common and dangerous misapprehension among the general public that if a product is legal, then it is safe to use, particularly if prescribed by a physician. While drugs such as cannabis and opium are naturally sourced, pharmaceuticals are synthesised artificially from chemicals.
Pharmaceutical drugs are the UK's largest export, and powerful drug companies throughout the world hold sway over the medical industry, dictating what doctors should prescribe. This has resulted in drugs such as thalidomide, seroxat and adderall being approved and prescribed by medics, with catastrophic side effects.
As there are so many types of pharmaceutical drugs on the market, with so many different effects, it is impossible to list them all on this website.
Commonly abused pharmaceuticals include barbiturates, which come in several types, some shown in the third photo at the top of this page. These are the drugs that killed Jimi Hendrix, contrary to the popular belief that he had taken heroin. Many tranquilizers are commonly used, such as benzodiazopines which include temazepam (jellies) and diazepam (10ml of which = vallium). These are less toxic than barbiturates, but overdose is not uncommon and all are highly addictive.
There are many hallucinogens that are used in psychiatric medicine such as atropine. These are known as deliriants. Other forms of these are used as painkillers, such as hyoscyamine, or as antihistamines such as dymenhydrinate.
Other hallucinogens include phencyclidine, known as PCP or "angeldust". Dextromethorphan is found in many over the counter cough medicines and chlorphenamine is a common antihistamine. These types of hallucinogens are known as "disassociatives", as the user is often unaware of their actions.
Anti-psychotics such as clorpromazine (largactil) and fluoxetine have all found their way onto the street.
There are many legal stimulants on the market, including sympathomimetics, such as adrenaline and dopamine, which both occur naturally in the human body. Arecoline is used to treat Alzheimer's patients and has a similar effect to nicotine on the body. Yohimbine is found in many over the counter forms and is also a prescription medicine. It is used recreationally as a stimulant and aphrodisiac.
Pharmaceutical use is common across all walks of life, and many see it as a socially acceptable form of addiction, in the same way that alcohol is regarded. Drug abuse of all types has increased despite and because of prohibition. Many prescription drugs are available on the black market due to the difficulty of obtaining a prescription. The law regarding the possession or supply of these substances varies, as do the effects and dangers. All should be treated with extreme caution.
